From that date travellers holding valid Schengen visas are accepted to enter Switzerland.
The Embassy of Switzerland will issue Schengen visas from 15 December 2008 onwards.
It is not clear how long it takes to process the Schengen visa after Swiss joins the scheme. The Switzerland embassy in Indonesia states on their website that it takes up to 2 months to process the (previous) Swiss visa and applicants are advised to submit their document 2 months prior their planned journey. However, Schengen visa, which previously covered 24 countries before (Austria, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain and Sweden), states 10 to 12 working days to process the visa.
It is best to check with the embassy in the country where you live, to ensure you have sufficient time to have your Schengen visa processed. Recently an Indonesian couple who submitted their Schengen visa application to the Netherlands consular in Aberdeen, Scotland, must wait up to 6 weeks to get their visas, and this was before Switzerland officialy joined the scheme.
